The U.S. District Court of Massachusetts has ruled in favor of Genlyte Thomas Group LLC, a subsidiary of The Genlyte Group Inc. , in a patent infringement suit against Arch Lighting Group Inc. and its Arch Lighting Systems division.
A jury decided that a line of Taunton, Mass.-based Arch Lighting Systems' hospital-room lighting products infringed on one of Genlyte Thomas Group's patents, according to a news release from Louisville-based Genlyte (NASDAQ: GLYT), which manufactures lighting fixtures and related products for the commercial, industrial and residential markets.
The court awarded damages of $238,000 and required Arch Lighting Systems to pay Genlyte a per-fixture royalty of $67 for every product sold since Sept. 30, 2006.

Becky Blackman is raising money for medical equipment that detects a condition known as Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome. Blackman was diagnosed herself with the disorder, although it took time for doctors to figure out her problem.
The disease causes, in addition to fainting, seizures and heart stoppage and studies indicate that 500 people can die each year from SADS. Blackman has been fitted with a small defibrillator and is now flourishing.
In order to raise money for the diagnostic equipment, Blackman and her family are sponsoring a swim on March 9 in Nottinghamshire. Swimmers taking part in the fundraising effort will try to cover 4,000 lengths of the pool, as a combined team, in less than two hours at the John Carroll Leisure Center.
