All UIL High Schools Must Carry AED’s
In a bold and sweeping move, all UIL high schools in Texas have been ruled to have at least one external defibrillator on campus as of Aug.1 2007, ruled by the UIL Legislative Council. The ruling also requires that a plan be in place to implement, coordinate, and maintain the AED’s by the same time line.
The ruling comes after several high profile Texas student athletes suddenly died or collapsed while training or competing in high school athletic events in the past few months.
The AED mandate also follows Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst’s announcement that he will ask Texas legislators to require all the state’s 8,000 schools to have an AED on hand.
