DRE Helps Surgery Centers in New York Obtain Accreditation

DRE offers assistance to office-based surgery centers by providing affordable refurbished new medical equipment.

On January 14, 2008, a New York State law went into effect that will require office-based surgery (OBS) centers to be fully accredited by a nationally recognized agency determined by the New York State Commissioner of Health. To obtain and maintain accreditation, OBS centers will be required to possess medical and surgical equipment that increase patient safety.

DRE, Inc., a premier distributor of new and refurbished medical equipment, is able to supply OBS centers with equipment needed to obtain and maintain accreditation. According to Ben Gill, a Division Manager at DRE, the company’s refurbished equipment is attractive to OBS centers with fixed budgets.

“New York surgery centers can save a great deal of money when they buy refurbished equipment from DRE,” says Gill. “This could help them obtain and maintain accreditation for less than they would spend on new equipment.”

In addition to refurbished equipment, DRE sells a variety of affordable new equipment that could help OBS centers achieve accreditation. Factory-new products include the DRE Waveline Plus Vitals Signs Monitor, DRE Integra SP II Anesthesia System, and DRE Maxx Luxx II Operating Room Lights.

Once requirements of the law go into effect, affected OBS centers may be required to posses one of each of the following: An autoclave, operating room table or chair, proper surgical lighting, vital signs monitor with CO2, defibrillator or AED, sequential compression device, airway management kit, EKG machine, anesthesia machine, ventilator, standalone SpO2 monitor, crash cart, and blanket warmer.

OBS centers to which the law is applicable must be accredited by an agency approved by the Commissioner of Health by July 14, 2009. OBS centers that may need to become accredited include oral/maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, urological surgery, ambulatory surgery, and cosmetic surgery centers. OBS centers interested in purchasing equipment from DRE can view the company’s complete product listings at the company’s website.

Grandsons of Welch Allyn Founder Inducted into Medical Distribution Hall of Fame

Bill and Lew Allyn, grandsons of the founder of Welch Allyn, were named the 14th and 15th inductees into the Medical Distribution Hall of Fame.

The two men were honored for playing a key role in bringing the medical device industry to where it is today. Bill Allyn, who served as president and CEO of the medical equipment manufacturing company, is regarded as a visionary in the field of medical diagnostic equipment. Lew Allyn served as vice president of the international division for medical products, corporate vice president, and executive vice president and general manager of sales and marketing. Both served on the company’s board of directors until 2007

“Bill and Lew are living legends in the medical device manufacturing industry,” said Julie Shimer, president and CEO, Welch Allyn. “They played significant roles in building our sales force, strengthening relationships with distributors, and enhancing product development.”

Each year since 2001 Repertoire publishers and editors and other leading industry insiders honor individuals that have made lasting contributions to the medical distribution industry through induction into the Medical Distribution Hall of Fame.

Welch Allyn is a leading manufacturer of medical diagnostic equipment. In addition to the company’s line of diagnostic medical equipment, the company manufacturers a full range of popular medical equipment products including exam lights, vital signs monitors, ekg machines, cardiac monitors, and AEDs (automatic external defibrillators).

Medtronic Expands Chinese Footprint

US-based Medtronic Inc., manufacturer of a well-known line of defibrillators and AEDs including the popular Medtronic Physio-Control Lifepak 500 AED, has announced a joint venture with Hong Kong-based Shandong Weigao Group.

Medtronic, which will own a 51% interest in this venture, will continue to manufacturer its products in the US. Rather than this being another case of an American company moving to China to make products to be sold back to American consumers, Medtronic will now offer quality American-made products to new Chinese consumers.

The terms of this agreement will initially focus on Medtronic’s spinal-fusion surgery devices, and will allow Medtronic to capitalize on Weigao’s expertise in artificial hips and knees.

According to a Medtronic spokesman, the company has had some presence in China since 1989, but its China earnings represented only two to three percent of its total bottom line. That will now change, though it has not been reported whether the terms of this agreement will allow Medtronic to access Weigao’s customer base to expand its market position in Asia for other Medtronic products, such as their line of defibrillators.

Medtronic Emergency Response Systems is a leader in defibrillation technology. Over 40 years ago, Medtronic Emergency Response Systems defibrillators set the standard upon which an entire industry was built.
