Surgical Table Types:

Guide and Definitions for Surgery Table Features

• Stationary:  Fix or stationary tables are connected to the floor of the operating room.  They tend to offer more stability and better clearance underneath the system for imaging units and staff.  This is typically an option seen in full blown higher volume  operating room.
• Wheeled / Mobile:  These units are wheeled units that can be moved within the operating room based on case needs or space considerations.  Recent tables to enter the market have branded themselves as "mobile" due to larger casters and the ability to be easy moved from room to room.
• Trendelenburg:  Patients feet are raised 15 to 30 degrees higher than the head.  It is often used in abdominal or gynecological procedures as well as perfusion in respiratory patients.
• Reverse Trendelenburg:  Patients head is raised to position 15 to 30 degrees higher than the feet.  This position is used in certain head, neck, and gynecological procedures to help with reducing blood flow to those areas.  It is also useful for ophthalmic surgery in larger patients.
• Horizontal Tilt: Usually related directly to trendelenburg positioning.  Most tables will tilt at least 20 degrees in both directions, in some cases tables will tilt as much as 40 degrees.  When considering a table make sure it has the needed horizontal tilt and all the necessessary safety features to accomodate for the movement and angles.
• Back and Leg Adjustment: Angle adjustment to patients back and feet.
• Rotation:  Up to 360 degree adjustment of the table top around the base.
• Kidney Bridge / Elevator:  Can be integrated or as an attachment and is typically elevated during kidney surgery to improve access.
• Height Adjustment: Most tables range from 25 inches in the low position to around 45 inches in the highest.  This is needed when transferring the patient from and to various platforms and also during procedures to accomidate the surgery team.
• Motorized vs. Manual:  Fully featured tables have a number of electronic functions controlled by both a hand and foot control.  Along with motorized back and foot sections, these tables allow for various angles in both the horizontal and lateral positions.  Many include preset postions and return to level functions.  Manual tables retain a more traditional method and use crank or hydrolic mechanism in place of electronics and motors.  Significant cost savings can be realized if motorized options are not preferred.
• Remote Controls:  Most common are hand and foot controls. Hand controls usually include all functions while foot controls are used with a limited set.  Consider asking for more than one of each to maximize uptime.  They are the most likely failure point due to accidental damage or loss. 
• Weight Capacity: Range from 350 pounds to over 1,000 pounds.  Typically barriatric style tables have a 1,000 pound capacity.
• Radiotranslucent / MRI Compatible: Compatibility with imaging technology is becoming a much more mainstream need and is associated with the growing popularity of the hybrid operating room that incorporates imaging during the procedure.
• Tabletop Slide: This can be longitudinal or lateral. Unless it is specifically for (C-ARM floating top) usually only have longitudinal slide. Allows user to position patient for Imaging purposes. This could be for C-ARM or portable X-RAY
• Floating Top:  Advanced feature which adds diagonal movement for complete continuous smooth control in every direction on the horizontal plane.
• Leveling:  Return to level is available in mid range models and higher. It is beneficial if there are multiple procedures on same patient. It allows faster throughput on the current patient as well as preparing for the next procedure as well as taking any guess work out of the actual level state.
• Battery Powered:  There are two primary advantages to having battery power. One is for back up if there is a loss of power. The other is using on battery during cases removes tripping hazard, damage, and interference of power cord on floor.
• Self Leveling Locking Brakes:  Advanced feature that levels the table automatically on uneven surfaces.
• Remote Break Lock:  Locks the table in place so accidental commands or movements cannot be made until unlocked.
