forceps

An instrument resembling a pair of pincers, used for grasping, manipulating, or extracting, especially in surgery.

Forceps come in two basic types, non-locking and locking. Non-locking forceps are often called thumb forceps or pick-ups, and can either be hinged like tweezers or like scissors. Locking forceps hold the grasping surfaces in a set position to facilitate manipulation or to independently hold an object.
